BASIC FUNCTION
University of Iowa Health Care Department of Otolaryngology is seeking a Research Associate to perform clinical functional testing in the area of complement-mediated rare renal disease. The Research Associate will support clinical and research efforts while contributing to the overall success of the functional team in the Molecular Otolaryngology and Renal Research Laboratories – Clinical Diagnostics Services (MORL CDS). This advanced-level position involves conducting experiments, managing data, and assisting in the development of hypotheses and protocols, with opportunities for professional growth. The key areas of responsibilities include conducting clinical and research activities/experiments, collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data, preparing reports, contributing to manuscripts/publications, administrative and project management, facilities and equipment management, and supervision/staffing.
DUTIES TO INCLUDE:
Clinical Diagnostic Service:
- Execute clinical laboratory activities following established protocols and guidelines. Conduct laboratory assays, including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), turbidimetric assays, and immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE).
- Maintain, organize, and report data using MS Word, Excel, and other relevant software, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
- Coordinate daily activities with team members to meet daily, weekly, and monthly deadlines, ensuring timely achievement of clinical service.
- Perform and meet proficiency and competency testing standards while maintaining meticulous records in compliance with regulatory requirements.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., biology, biochemistry, immunology) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 3–5 years of hands-on wet-lab experience in a biology/immunology laboratory, with ability to work independently.
- Proficiency in common lab techniques such as tissue culture, PCR, ELISA, Western blotting/protein electrophoresis, and functional complement/hemolytic assays (as applicable).
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot assays, maintain accurate lab records, and manage multiple priorities.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Proficiency with common software tools (Microsoft Office); experience with data management and analysis tools (e.g., FileMaker Pro and/or R).
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working in a CLIA-certified and/or other regulated laboratory environment.
- Familiarity with regulatory compliance, SOP-driven workflows, quality assurance/quality control, and documentation standards.

BASIC FUNCTION
Perform research in the area of complement mediated renal diseases, perform clinical testing as a member of the CDS renal team and perform research and development. The Research Assistant will work with frozen serum and plasma samples received into the Molecular Otolaryngology and Renal Research Laboratories – Clinical Diagnostics Services (MORL CDS) for Functional and Biomarker testing. The RA will perform sample accessioning, aliquoting, perform assays, report results, maintain inventory and quality management for the CDS.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Hands-on wet-lab experience with immunology/biochemistry techniques, including PCR and/or ELISA and/or DNA/protein electrophoresis.
Strong attention to detail with accurate documentation and data recording.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience handling human specimens (serum/plasma) and following biosafety practices.
Familiarity with complement assays or related immunoassays.
Experience working with SOPs and basic quality practices.
