Yuzhou Zhang, PhD
My area of research interest focuses on two complement-mediated renal diseases, C3 Glomerulopathy (C3G) and atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (aHUS). I am a team lead of the serology diagnostic team and renal research team in the Molecular Otolaryngology and Renal Research Laboratories (MORL) at the University of Iowa. I have made many significant advances in the understanding of two diseases, including the identification of novel genetic causes of C3G and defining the role of C3 nephritic factors in disease pathogenesis.

Ciao! I am hardcore Italian and the Genetic Renal Team Leader in the Clinical Diagnostics Division of the MORL. We perform Next Generation Sequencing using a custom Genetic Renal Panel to identify genetic contributions to disease in patients with complement-related kidney diseases such as atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (aHUS), TMAs related disorders and C3 Glomerulopathies (C3G). Of note, I am not a supporter of fettuccine/chicken Alfredo!

As the general laboratory supervisor and safety officer I oversee general lab operations and maintain certifications, monitor and coordinate lab safety, and administer general trainings for the MORL.

My job is to oversee the daily operations of the MORL including expenditures, inventory, account reconciliation, HR, as well as, contribute to short and long-term plans for systems and processes of our translational laboratory. I continue to work with the CDS division on strategic management and furthering missions of the MORL, which are to provide excellent patient care. To continue this mission into our Research Division (RD), I am honored to work as the primary coordinator for the annual C3 Glomerulopathy/Dense Deposit Disease (C3G/DDD) Family Conference.
