Yuzhou Zhang, PhD
Senior Research Scientist (Functional Renal/ Renal Research Team Lead)
Person Type:

My area of research interest focuses on two complement-mediated renal diseases, C3 Glomerulopathy (C3G) and atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (aHUS). I am a team lead of the serology diagnostic team and renal research team in the Molecular Otolaryngology and Renal Research Laboratories (MORL) at the University of Iowa. I have made many significant advances in the understanding of two diseases, including the identification of novel genetic causes of C3G and defining the role of C3 nephritic factors in disease pathogenesis. I have also developed refined and novel functional assays of the complement system to permit biomarker profiling of disease activity in C3G. Collectively, these tests allow us to provide clinicians a comprehensive picture of the degree of the complement deregulation in their patients. I have been seeking new knowledge in the pathophysiology underlying C3G and aHUS using animal models.
